Have a 3 prong plug on a 2000 model Century welder, bought at a sale.Outlet in my 4 yr. old toolshed is 4 prong. If I put a 4 prong plug on welder cord,do I put red and black wires together on outlet to power the welder.?50 amp breaker has red and black power wires.Rather change plug end and keep 4 hole outlet in case I get newer welder later.Clear as mud?

TIA ,Dale

From the three wires on your welder, put red to red on the wall, black to black on the wall, and I'm assuming green on your welder to ground on the wall.  I just went through the same thing but my welder had white, black, and green wires in the wire. Don't know why some idiot in a standards office decided that running a white wire (supposed to be neutral) to a hot wire in the wall was a good idea. Either that or Miller decided that 120v colours were good in a 240v application because the wire was cheaper or something.

The black and red wires from the breaker should be L1 and L2. There should be 240 volts between them, so do not hook them both to anything!

You will connect red in wall plug to white in welder cord..............
Black in wall plug to black in welder cord.............
Green or bare wire in wall plug to green in welder cord.
White in wall plug should be a neutral and your welder apparently doesn't have one, so nothing to that one.

Here's a link to a chart that shows the straight blade configurations............look down at 125/250 3 pole 4 wire single phase

If you have a locking receptacle, then this is the link

cc, how is it you know so much about everything :-) Our vet can't plug in a welder, I'm pretty sure! ccjersey

Dairy farmer at 2am can do almost anything with whatever's in the shed!

It helps in the training of the dairy farmer if the nearest dairy service truck is 1-1/2 hours away.

Yep, ccjersey nailed it.  Same colours in your welder wiring as mine.  I had a discussion about the colour changes with an electrician friend and had a good laugh.  It got even better when we started talking 12v wiring colours with red-positive black-negative on a vehicle also being black-ground white-positive except when you switch to trailer wiring where white is the ground instead of a positive wire.

Oh, and if I understand things correctly, the 4 prong connector is the "old" style, which has since changed to the 3 prong plug that your welder came with.  Looks like your new shop was wired up the "old" way.

Sorry GinNB, the 4 wire is the new way.  This gives an actual insulated neutral and normal ground.  Carries into ALL new 220 voltage outlets/plugs.  Black=HOT; Red=HOT; White=Neutral; Bare/Green=Ground.

But then why is my ancient garage wired with 4 prong and a new welder comes with 3 prong 220 wiring?

The way I understand it, is the four wire recepticle is for appliances that use both 120 and 240 volt circuits, such as a dryer that uses 240 for the heating elements and 120 for the motor. With the four wires you have a separate neutral for the 120 volt circuit. Oddly, we used to have an old century welder (maybe 40 or 50 years old) that had a three wire 240 volt power cord, and had a 120 volt recepticle built into the welder, to run small tools from. It sure wouldn't pass code today. yallardeere

In my experience white is neutral in 110 v applications but in 220 it is hot. One type of  wire two applications.
