Continuous Video Autofocus 5d Mk Iii
Is there continuous auto focus for the canon 5d Mark iii?
Is there continuous auto focus for the canon 5d Mark iii?

Excuse the nature of this question if this is horrifyingly obvious (not very tech savvy sadly lol).
Does the canon 5D Mark iii have any feature of a continuous auto focus? like if youre shooting a video and it'll lock focus on a car or a human or a balloon etc? or what about photos? like if you lock focus on a person or car etc will it follow that subject in focus while you take photos?
I ask because from my understanding the canon 5d mark iii, doesnt have that capability? but i checked the BH photo website for specs under the 5m3 and it says focus modes include "continuous servo AF" - doesnt that mean it focuses continuously automatically by locking in focus on a subject? I shoot using the BBF btw. I was thinking of purchasing the sony a7iii later on after its released and more videos regarding the camera come out as well. Does the sony a7iii have these features im talking about? and are the features im talking about called continuous auto focus or is there another term for it?
Im mainly wanting the A7iii for videos because its smaller, lighter, and from my understanding has that capability to track and lock focus on subjects even moving at a fast rate as well as slow mo. is that a good choice for videos?

Yes, for still photos through the real eye level viewfinder.
Gets complicated when talking about video.

thanks for answering. well I mean,.. yes i can track a subject by continuously holding the back button - it works but i mean is there a way for my camera to actively track subject automatically without me pressing a button? same question goes for video

One of the main reasons I upgraded from the 5D III to IV was that focusing during video was frustrating. The IV, with its dual pixels and touch screen, vastly improves on this. But for still photography the auto focus in the III is very sophisticated, including tracking moving subjects — this was probably its biggest advance over the II. For still photography, the III and IV are virtually identical — the autofocus improvement in the IV is only incremental.

I see, but i still dont understand so there is or isnt *continuous* auto focus on the mark iii?
auto focus yes, i am able to capture moving subjects by continuously holding the back button, but other than that no - or constantly focusing and recomposing.

For still photography, if you mean can you just point the camera at a scene and have it continually focus automatically, then no. The camera has "AI Focus" but you must initiate focus, as you have said, using either the half press of the shutter release or back button focusing.

Yes. Page 71 of the manual ...
AI Servo AF for Moving Subjects
This AF operation is suited for moving subjects when the focusing distance keeps changing. While you hold down the shutter button halfway, the camera will keep focusing on the subject continuously.
I'm sure the camera will do everything you require of it for stills. But for video it probably won't.

Yes for stills - no for video

You would need a cam with dual pixel technology to get continuous AF during video.

I thought some cameras were equipped with that feature, such as the sony a7riii (just one model as ive been pondering about). so... does that mean it does have that technology? because the canon 5dm3 doesnt, but i was thinking many others do so it wasn't anything "special" / unattainable in fairly priced cameras

Yes, 5DIII can track in X and Y axis, but this is very primitive compared to many DSLRs and MILCs from Nikon's and Sony's. I don't know anything about live view AF.

Not true. Lots of cameras do continuous AF during video without duel pixel tech

No, there isn't, and why would there? If you aren't pressing any button then you are obviosuly not taking pictures either. There's no point in the camera spending battery charge on focus tracking subjects you aren't taking pictures of anyway.
As for video, you need a 5D Mark IV or 1DX Mark II or some other of the newest, cheaper models to get Servo AF in video mode. The 1DX Mark II does allow this video Servo AF to be configured either to run only when you are recording video, or also when recording is paused. Maybe the other cameras work the same there. I've only tried that on the 1DX Mark II.

Re: Is there continuous auto focus for the canon 5d Mark iii?
I feel like there are a lot of people not understanding what you are actually asking. Are you asking about follow focus? So if you are in video, and you have your camera pointed at an object, but then you point at something else, it will focus on that automatically without you having to refocus manually? Then no, the Mark III does not have that feature. I am not sure if the Mark IV does or not, but I know the 1dx does.
Re: Is there continuous auto focus for the canon 5d Mark iii?
The 1DX does not, but the 1DX Mark II can do that. While video recording is running.

this is EXACTLY what im asking! yes exactly.
not if the 5Dm3 can "auto focus" without touching the focus ring - yes i know it can do that via bbf. but i wasn't sure if it could lock focus on something and then continue to follow focus if i were to move and not adjust the bbf or even half shutter (which i have disabled but same difference)
thank you for understanding and clarifying that up for me. im under the impression the sony a7iii has that feature that you are talking about with the follow focus feature so that is the camera i am considering getting.
Re: Is there continuous auto focus for the canon 5d Mark iii?
Actually I was searching for a thread like this all over the internet.
I have a 5d mark iii.
I always use it for photography so still photos taken and if I press AF-on back button then anywhere I pull the chosen focus point it focuses exactly there.
Though if I switch to video recording AND HERE IS THE MOST ANNOYING THING then I have no AI servo only get one shot option. So my AF point with my back AF on button focusing at a specific subject and even if I keep pushing that button and pull the camera at different object the previously pushed button still didn't released but camera not changing focus so I have to release button and push it again...
so a moving object toward me I just can't keep it in focus...
what are my options?

The Sony A7III does in fact have continuous autofocus like you are talking about. I know the A7R/S ii both have it as well. I use a Fujifilm XT2 for video and its continuous AF is spectacular. I can pretty much grab a target and move all around, getting closer and further away and it will remain in focus. Really nice feature for using fast lenses with a shallow DOF.
Re: Is there continuous auto focus for the canon 5d Mark iii?
I had the same issue here and short of buying the Mark iV I've been using the features in Magic Lantern to show where the focus is when shooting video.
ML has a feature called peak focus which shows on the display screen which parts of the field of view are in focus. (in my case it shows up as green artefacts).
When you get used to this, you can manually adjust the focus ring as required to keep the subject in focus. Yes its not as fast as auto but it actually isn't too bad with a bit of practise.
Also the auto focus (button at the back) method doesn't use contrast detect to nail the focus so if you lose focus on the subject you can use this and it doesn't show as contrast changes on the video.
If you open the F stop a bit for a deeper depth of field, you can do a reasonable job with this method.
